11 July 2022: Online Chat on UK Work Culture with Peter Fincham

5 July 2022.  Back by popular demand! In March 2022, Portsmouth-based businessman and part-time author Peter Fincham gave an introduction to UK work culture to our first group of migrant job seekers. Our participants then were learning about UK expectations on how CVs and cover letters should look.

We benefitted so much from Peter’s honest take, also at times humorous and always very supportive. He will help the group to understand some of the things a person new to working in the UK may not be initially familiar with. The session will focus on certain things an employer would expect during the application process, as well as the sort of cultural norms that exist within the workplace that are important for everyone to appreciate once they’ve secured employment.

Our first group of participants liked the talk so much that we are bringing this talk back for our second cohort going through our Job Preparation Support for Migrants. Many thanks to Peter for joining again and sharing his thoughts and perspectives gained as an employer with us. Bring your questions! Register for event link below!

POST-EVENT UPDATE: Thank you, Peter Fincham for the wonderful presentation! Also thanks to our participants for joining.

We are grateful to our speaker Peter for his talk on introduction to work culture in the UK. Our participants were very fortunate to benefit from Peter’s experiences as a Technology, People and Business Change professional. Moreover, his enthusiasm to see our participants succeed was palpable.

There were many special notes in his talk. One moment particularly stood out when Peter encouraged a participant to speak of her childrearing years with pride because juggling childcare is not invisible work. It signifies, to the employer, that she can juggle multiple responsibilities. So many professional women — and more and more professional men too — struggle with this work-life balance: how much of our role as parents do we obscure from the workplace, fearing that our colleagues won’t take us seriously. Yet, this model is clearly not fit-for-use, if we value diversity in the workplace.

Thank you Peter for your time and commitment to our community. We are already looking forward to your next talk!
