28 October 2023. For the October edition of Food with Friends, WBI hosted an NHS-led talk on cancer prevention followed by a delicious lunch at the historical venue in old Portsmouth.
Our Food with Friends participants were grateful for the interactive discussion and essential information on different kinds of cancer, symptoms and care in the hospital by Edit Galambos, from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.
Increased knowledge on the subject helps reduce anxiety and demystify perception of cancer in some cultures. The lead nurse shared key information on the latest advances in treatment , screenings and hospital care to raise awareness.
While October has been a challenging month both globally and locally, Food with Friends provided a safe and warm space to some of Portsmouth’s migrant community to come together and share a positive learning experience in a socially relaxed environment.
Information leaflets on different types of cancer provided in-depth knowledge for our international friends to take with them. Additionally, participants were encouraged to visit the Macmillan Cancer Support website for details on more support in the community for patients and their carers.
To lighten up the mood after an intense discussion, our guests enjoyed a ‘get-to-know each other’ game hosted by our Director of Engagement, Anita David. It was a great opportunity for participants to make new friends.
The event successfully concluded with a delicious meal prepared by a local South Asian business, fostering community growth and a sustainable local economy.
We are grateful to Portsmouth University Hospitals NHS Trust and The National Lottery Community Fund for their massive support.
