10 March 2025. Our Food with Friends last month was another fantastic outreach session in collaboration with Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and Portsmouth City Council.

The incredible Sharon Court, Patient and Public Involvement Facilitator from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, led an insightful discussion on community involvement in public health research. She explained the various roles research participants can take on—ranging from simple telephone surveys to hospital visits.

Sharon also highlighted how the lack of diverse research has led to healthcare technologies that don’t always meet the needs of people from all backgrounds, contributing to health inequalities. Her examples were eye-opening, helping the group appreciate the vital role research plays in shaping more inclusive healthcare.

Many attendees were surprised to learn that participation does not always involve invasive procedures, challenging common misconceptions about research involvement.

Additionally, the wonderful Community Connector Natalie Gordon from Portsmouth City Council’s Independence and Wellbeing Team, encouraged participants to engage in local activities to enhance their quality of life. She provided a variety of resources to help people connect with services and opportunities within the community.

Community connectors like Natalie play a vital role in supporting new migrants by bridging the gap between the migrant community and the wider society, fostering integration, and creating a sense of belonging.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sharon and Natalie for sharing their time and expertise with the community.

Of course, no Food with Friends gathering would be complete without delicious food! Tugba Bektas once again delighted everyone with her culinary skills. Nevertheless, her handcrafted chocolate desserts were the undeniable highlight of the meal!

Food with Friends is a project supported by the National Lottery Community Fund to drive how businesses can contribute to reducing health inequalities in our local communities.

Every month, WBI organises a hot meal for migrants and other families in Portsmouth while we learn about important health topics.

As always, our participants enjoyed a wonderful meal, gained valuable insights to reduce health inequalities, and built new friendships at Food With Friends. See you at the next event!
