22 March 2025. WBI hosted another fantastic Food with Friends event on “Cancer and Smoking” led by Shipa Ahmed Khan, health inequalities lead from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and our executive director, Bonny Ling. The community gathered to learn about early detection, screening, and ways to reduce the risk of cancer.

We were fortunate to have the wonderful Dr. Carolina Machuga Vargas from the University of Portsmouth, who graciously supported us as our Spanish interpreter, which made a tremendous difference to our South American participants. Her invaluable efforts enabled our Spanish-speaking attendees to fully participate in all the discussions.

The group received an overview of the three main NHS national cancer screening programs: breast, cervical, and bowel. We explored the various services and support available across the UK, including those provided by the NHS, GP surgeries, and independent charity organizations.

A key part of our discussion focused on self-advocacy in medical settings, ensuring our concerns are acknowledged and properly investigated. We also had a meaningful conversation about managing medical anxiety, recognising the tendency to downplay symptoms, and overcoming embarrassment when discussing certain health concerns.

Bonny delivered an engaging talk on the significant impact of smoking—a major risk factor for cancer—on overall health outcomes. Many were surprised to learn about the wide range of public services and community groups available to support smoking cessation, as well as the latest effective treatments, including vaping and nicotine patches, which are commonly used in smoke-free programs to help individuals transition away from cigarettes.

This time, we indulged in special Salvadorian cuisine, featuring delicious cheesy pupusas with beef mince, semita, and empanadas. It was a pleasure to welcome a surprise visitor—a staff member from the Salvadorian Embassy. We had an impromptu discussion about our community work and our engagement with the Salvadorian community.

Food with Friends is a project supported by the National Lottery Community Fund to drive how businesses can contribute to reducing health inequalities in our local communities.

Every month, WBI organises a hot meal for migrants and other families in Portsmouth while we learn about important health topics. See you at the next event!
