13 October 2023. WBI’s Project Officer Shuhan Lin attended a special event at the House of Lords in Westminster on 6 September 2023 hosted by Lord Teverson, in his capacity as the patron for the INGO Human Rights At Sea.
Screened at the event was the trailer for a new documentary, “Death at Sea” based on the investigative work done by Human Rights at Sea concerning the death in 2020 of fisheries observer Eritara Aati from Kiribati onboard a Taiwan-flagged vessel. The trailer is now publicly available to view and support, here.
WBI works to bring in better protection for those who work at sea. In September 2023, we contributed to efforts to develop civil society recommendations for the placement and protection of migrant fishers, following a key ASEAN Declaration on the topic in May 2023. Earlier this year, our Director Dr Bonny Ling spoke at an Asian Regional Workshop to promote human and labour rights for seafarers and sea-based Migrant Workers.

In 2022, Human Rights At Sea published the international report, “All at Sea? Is the Global Maritime Sector Effective in Business & Human Rights Implementation?” with key contributions from WBI. Written over three years of extensive research, the report reviews developments made under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and what they mean for a responsible maritime economy.
We applaud the longstanding work by civil society and supporters to spotlight human rights abuses at sea. We are honoured to contribute to this space, with representatives from governments, law, marine industries, journalism, civil society, businesses and think-tanks. All needs to be based on amplifying workers’ voices!
