21 November 2023. As one of the contributors to Portsmouth City Council’s Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) consultation meeting  in January 2023, WBI welcomes and shares our feedback to the council’s EDI Draft Strategy for 2024-2027.

Work Better Innovations (WBI) would like to take this opportunity to welcome Portsmouth City Council’s commitment to “champion diversity, equity and inclusion, cultivating a safe environment for staff, residents and businesses to achieve their full potential through empowerment, innovation and freedom of expression”, as set out in the Mission Statement of its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Draft Strategy.

As a community interest company that works in the field of business and human rights, we especially champion the importance of eliminating discriminatory barriers in employment and in all aspects of public life. Our local economy can best thrive when it is inclusive and dynamic.

Work Better Innovations’ work is rooted in working with migrant and minority communities in and around Portsmouth to realise the vision of an inclusive and sustainable economy, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on social equity.

We support Portsmouth City Council’s framework, setting out the four modules of improvement to guide the implementation of its EDI Strategy:

  • understanding and working with your communities;
  • leadership, partnership and organisational commitment;
  • responsive services and customer care; and
  • diverse and engaged workforce.

In January 2023, WBI participated in the series of community consultations conducted by the Portsmouth City Council on its EDI Strategy.

We welcomed the release of the consultation findings in April 2023 (read our commentary here). The Draft EDI Strategy sets out Portsmouth’s approach to improving EDI for the four years 2024–2027. It will be reviewed by the City Cabinet before the adoption of a final strategy.

We celebrate the work done so far by all involved and welcome this continued commitment by the Portsmouth City Council to improve processes and policies to ensure that we deliver social benefits for all residents in our beautiful waterfront city.
