7 November 2024. For the October Food With Friends we were thrilled to host South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) to teach our newly arrived migrant community about the ambulance service and what to do in an emergency.
Huge thanks to Nikhyta Patel, Patient and Public Engagement Facilitator, and Roger Batterbury, Patient Experience for the important first aid and life-saving training to our migrant families.
At this event, our amazing guest speakers focused on teaching essential CPR skills and the importance of knowing when to access emergency services through 999 and when to use 111. This session improved the participants’ understanding of emergency and non-emergency situations.
Community members from all age groups had an exciting opportunity to have hands-on CPR training on Annie the mannequin, learning life-saving techniques that can make a difference in critical situations. We had a great discussion with our guests about different emergency scenarios including CPR on newborns, Good Samaritan law and how effective CPR has changed over the years.
All of our participants at the workshop had the opportunity to develop an often-overlooked life skill – how to tell when someone is not breathing and what you can do to give them the best chance of survival.
WBI launched Food with Friends in the winter of 2022 with support from Portsmouth City Council’s Community Inclusion Grant. Thanks to the second funding from the National Lottery Community Fund we started our third run since September 2024. Every month, we host a warm meal in an accessible community space for migrants and other attendees and focus on an important public health topic.
